Our Creative Gene On Display

The Artist At Work

Blayde hard at work in his studio. Phoenix, Arizona, 2008. Photo provided by Blayde.

This page is a place to showcase some of the creative talent found throughout so many members of our family, in so many different ways. From photography to gunsmithing, oil painting to music, writing to woodworking, and a ton of other creative outlets. Anyone who has any creative object and/or skill that they want to share with the world, just take a photo, or make a scan, or make a recording, and send it to me, and Ill put up your own personal gallery. It can be one item, or many.

Since Blayde was the first one to send me his collection, he gets the honor of having his photo be the one for the main gallery page. The artist at work. How many of us see ourselves in that photo – alone in our studio, quietly bent over our easel, intensely laboring away in a burst of inspiration. Sometimes, at least. Other times it’s like pulling rusty nails out of old, dried boards using your teeth for pliers. Either way, you open a vein, and let it bleed.

I hope to see many more galleries arise here in the future.

Blayde’s Gallery – Blayde went to Photography School up in Boston in the early 70's. I remember taking the Greyhound up there to visit him. We'd hang out in his apartment, see the sights of Boston, and go to a Kinks concert or two. What was the name of that theater? He also does painting, drawing, and all sorts of creative things. Lot's of nudes in his work. A theme inherited from Grandpa, no doubt. There's also a lot of Uncle Harry in him - you should see his back yard. I think Sarah said it best, "Crazy Uncle Blayde".

Dan’s Gallery – Quite a collection, over 75 pieces (now that's a lot of scanning!). Some really great stuff. And some nudes, of course. Does any of us not paint nudes? Grandpa's legacy. Thank you, Grandpa! Danny did the Cabin image used for the logo that's on top of every page here. I always loved that painting of the Cabin, and when I got the idea to do this page, I immediately knew what should go on top - that image. He graciously allowed me to use it. Thanks again, Dan. I still haven't linked to the larger size photos yet, because that part is done manually, but they'll be coming. The thumbnails and regular sized images are there, so go take a look!

Katie’s Gallery – Katie sent me some more of her work. Beautiful pieces done in High School and College

Megan’s Gallery – A beautiful piece by Megan. More to come, I hope

Cindy Jo's Gallery – Blayde sent me some pics of Cindy Jo's work. Then Cindy Jo sent me a link to a couple of her galleries online, so I swiped a bunch of stuff off of them to put here. I hope she doesn't mind. I only took a sampling - there is plenty more at those sites. I suggest you go to them and take a look for yourselves. Cindy Jo does a variety of things, from architectural renderings (that's her profession, she actually gets paid to draw - what a deal!) to dead rock stars. And some live ones too, I think. I put links to her other galleries on the links page. She has one for her architectural renderings, and another for everything else. Cindy Jo also has a beautiful voice, and is the lead singer for Mandarin Road. I put a link to her MySpace page for the band/CD on the links page too.

Jena's Gallery – Another professional artist in the family. Jena is going to Art school at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. She also just got a job as the new Gallery Director for MassArt (Massachusetts College of Art and Design). And she is the Director of the Summer Arts Program for The Concord Academy, in Massachusetts - located where the Battle of Lexington at Concord was fought (Caroline Kennedy attended the Concord Academy, it was her High School). She has her own website, Jenathomas.net, I put a link to it on the Links page. Here is a brief excerpt from her Artist's Statement "In my current work I explore notions of memory and impermanence. I am currently working from a box of old family photos, dealing with how and why events are recorded and the desire to save and protect the recordings."

Hey - old family photos! I really like that idea! Maybe you can send me scans of the photos you used for your paintings and I can make a second gallery of the photos that inspired the first gallery!

Jessica's Gallery – Our first non-painting/drawing art gallery. Jessica's creative genes are expressed through her poetry. She sent me a few of her favorites. You can crusie her gallery just like the image based ones. Click on a thumbnail of a poem, and you'll be able to read it.
